Have you ever made an auto insurance claim, only to have it denied by an insurance company? There are many different reasons an auto insurance claim can be denied, and today we’re going to go over five of the most common.

1. You Don’t Have the Appropriate Coverage

Perhaps you only have the legally required minimum amount of auto insurance coverage and you don’t have comprehensive or collision insurance on your policy. Let’s say you get in an accident for which you’re at fault, and you attempt to make a claim to cover the damage to your vehicle. Without collision coverage, your claim is likely to be denied.

2. You Didn’t Report the Damage in Time

Insurance companies have different requirements for how quickly a driver must make a claim for damage to their vehicle. If you don’t make a claim within this period, you’re likely to be denied coverage.

3. You Didn’t Seek Medical Help in Time

When you seek medical attention right after an accident, this helps establish proof that your injuries were a result of the accident. If you’re injured after an automobile accident and you don’t seek medical help within a short period of time, there’s a good chance your auto insurance claim for covering medical costs from the accident could be denied.

4. You Made a Fraudulent Claim

If you make a false auto insurance claim it will not only be denied on the grounds of being fraudulent, but filing a fraudulent auto insurance claim is also a felony that faces even more serious consequences, including jail time.

5. The Responsible Driver’s Coverage Has Lapsed

If you’re injured or your vehicle is damaged in an accident that is the other driver’s fault, their insurance should go toward covering your damages (unless you live in a no-fault state). If the responsible driver hasn’t been making their premium payments, their coverage could have lapsed. In that case, your claim could be denied when you make a claim for their insurance coverage.
